RIM Announces BlackBerry 8130 Pearl 2 for CDMA Networks

RIM has officially launched a webpage for the forthcoming BlackBerry 8130 Pearl 2 as well as announcing new features in a press release.

The new smart device will feature upgraded software with improved font rendering, HTML browser (with a zoom feature similar to iPhone's Safari or Opera Mini 4) and support for parsing RTSP/3GP media links within the browser to view streaming video sites such as YouTube's mobile version.

The feature set of the phone is also improved over the original by featuring a 2.0 megapixel camera with flash and zoom over the original 1.3 megapixel unit, media player with the ability to edit playlists directly on the device, microSD slot with SDHC support, voice activated dialing and control, 3.5mm standard headphone jack, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP stereo audio support, and GPS support (the Verizon unit will reportedly have GPS disabled).

The device is expected to launch in November according to RIM, though no firm date was given in the release.

Review: Motorola RIZR Z8 / MOTORIZR Z8

The Motorola RIZR Z8 is an ambitious product. It takes the ultra-slim RAZR phone into the high-end world of the 3G smartphone. This is a phone that has the same kind of features as the brick-like Nokia N73, yet it's hardly any thicker than the original RAZR phone. It's Motorola's first Symbian phone since 2005, and the most highly powered of its current range of phones.

Physically, the Z8 is a development of the RIZR Z3, being a slimline slide phone. It's slightly thinner than the Z3, at just 15mm, but is wider and longer. The shape of the phone is unusual, as the rear edge of the phone is angled slightly when opened, giving it the appearance of a clamshell. It's an interesting design twist, making the phone easier to grip and more comfortable to hold to the ear than a conventional slider. The screen is excellent, being a bright TFT display with an amazing 16 million colours and one of the highest resolutions around. At 2.2 inches across, it's a very good size too - significantly larger than that of the RIZR Z3. The keypad is slightly cramped, but gives good positive feedback and isn't a problem to use unless you have very large fingers.

Technically the Z8 is far more advanced than the older generations of RAZR phones. It's a 3G phone with a high-speed HSPDA data speed of 3.6 Mbps, making it possible to download video, music and emails at broadband speeds. It also enables high quality video calling, using a full VGA-resolution second camera running at 30 frames per second for a flicker-free video calling experience. A 2 megapixel camera is provided for high resolution still photography, and this is equipped with a flash for low-light photography. The camera is fixed focus though, so cannot compete with the camera of the Nokia N73 or Sony Ericsson K810i, which both have autofocus cameras.

Musically, the Z8 is very well equipped. The media player supports music in MP3, AAC, AAC+ & AAC Enhanced formats in high quality stereo. The music player handles playlists and shuffles, and can synchronise with your PC via high-speed Bluetooth or USB 2.0. There is support for a wireless Bluetooth stereo headset (not supplied) or a conventional stereo headset. The media player also supports video playback of course, and in fact the phone is supplied with a MicroSD memory card containing The Bourne Identity (one of our favourite films!). The Z8 supports memory cards with up to 4 Gbytes capacity - sufficient for around 1,000 songs. On top of that the onboard user memory is a very generous 80 Mbytes.

We've already mentioned the high-speed HSPDA data access (3.6 Mbps), available in 3G regions. With 2G, EDGE is supported with download speeds of up to 236.8 kbps. An Opera web browser is supplied, with full mobile HTML support and the phone can handle email too. The phone is quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) so is usable worldwide.

As a Symbian phone, there is potentially a wealth of third party applications available, making the Z8 more like a mini-laptop than a phone. One word of warning though - Symbian systems lack the simplicity, speed and robustness of a simple phone interface. Fortunately the Z8 is equipped with plenty of RAM, but even so the Z8 does have a tendency to freeze or shut down.

The most similar competing phone is possibly the Nokia E65, which is also a 3G Symbian slide phone, but with more of a business focus. The Motorola RIZR Z3 is a budget version of the Z8, lacking the 3G and smartphone capabilities. The Motorola MAXX V6 is a 3G clamshell phone that shares many of the features of the Z8, but isn't a smartphone. If you want the best Motorola currently available, then the Z8 is probably the phone for you, but be aware that a 3G Symbian phone demands more from its owner than a normal phone! Be prepared to spend time learning how to use the phone, and we aware that the operating system isn't 100% robust. You can get the Z8 free on contract with a free memory card from Dialaphone.

Review: Nokia 6300

Nokia's slogan for the 6300 is "Simply beautiful - beautifully simple." The beauty comes from the sleek, classic design with stainless-steel surfaces, and the simplicity reflects the fact that this is an all-round kind of phone: not a smartphone, not 3G, but including all of the functionality that most people want. Sounds like a winner! Could Nokia finally be getting back to what it used to do best - a phone that does just what you want and does it well?

Certainly the phone looks good when you pick it up. It's like the early 6-series Nokia's: exclusive- and expensive-looking, practically designed with a good sized screen and functional keypad, yet updated for 2007 with a 5-way navigation button and high quality colour display. The size is perfect: it's very slim (just 11.7mm) and not too wide, and the weight is enough to make it feel solid and substantial, but not so much that it feels heavy. The keypad is a decent size and is easy to use. The display is exceptional: a high resolution 240 x 320 pixel display with an amazing 16 million colours. On the outside the 6300 ticks all the right boxes.

On the inside, the phone is equipped with all the features that a typical user would expect. The camera is 2 megapixels with an 8x digital zoom and with a video recording function. Enough for casual photography, but not brilliant. There's a music player and an FM radio. A standard Nokia headset is included in the sales package and support for a Bluetooth stereo headset is included. Memory for storing music is limited, with just 7.8 Mbytes of user memory, however you can expand the memory to a maximum of 2 Gbytes by buying a microSD card, which will give you as much memory as an iPod Nano. Both Bluetooth and USB connectivity are supported, and the phone has GPRS and EDGE for fast data downloads. Battery life is excellent. The user interface is a standard Series 40 interface, that Nokia users will be used to, but with the latest enhancements. It's basically a very easy phone to use, with everything well thought out and some real attention to detail.

This is our favourite Nokia phone for a long time. It really is beautiful - quality just oozes out of the phone when you pick it up. The metallic finish completes the look, although this may show scratches if not treated carefully. Ergonomics and user-friendliness are good. The strange thing is that Nokia built their reputation with phones like this, but what have they been doing these past few years with their funky but unusable fashion-phones and their buggy brick-like smartphones? Welcome back Nokia! It was worth the wait!

Review: Motorola RAZR2 V9m for Sprint

While the RAZR moniker might not demand the respect of users and the press that it once did, it is still one of the most successful lines of mobile devices ever - and certainly is the most successful that Motorola has ever offered. As such, it is no small thing to bestow a new family of devices with the label of RAZR2. That name draws some pretty lofty expectations from most people.

But here we have it, the new RAZR2 V9m for Sprint. This new EV-DO feature phone is thin, powerful, and offers a lot of modern day wizardry like streaming TV and touch controls with haptic feedback.

Physical Aspects

While it shares its lineage with the famed RAZR models of the past few years, the new Motorola RAZR2 V9m is a completely different device. It is better looking and more solidly, as well as thoughtfully, designed. The 120g (4.2oz) phone has many lovely details on it, including etched buttons that look quite pretty on the gnarled sides of the lower half of the clamshell. The rear of the device uses a new flush mounted battery cover that is coated with Motorola's grippy soft touch paint. The loudspeaker is located on the very bottom of the device, in the same 'chin' that is the home of the built-in antenna. The speaker has ports on the back and slanted bottom of the RAZR2, which helps ensure that it is unobstructed.

The front of the device, when closed, is where the new 2", QVGA resolution 65k color external display is located, directly beneath the lens for the 2 megapixel camera. The external display is huge when compared with most other handsets on the market. Its 3 touch sensitive buttons that are used in conjunction with the volume and smartkey buttons on the left edge of the phone allow users to control many features with the phone closed, including music playback and the Sprint TV service. The touch buttons are very easy to use thanks to vibration haptic feedback when they are pressed, but the display itself is lacking in color saturation. It is worth noting that the camera, smartkey, and volume buttons located on the edge of the V9m also provide vibration feedback when pressed.

Opening up the V9m reveals the large main QVGA resolution display, the flat RAZR-style keypad, and the massive metal hinge that is located between them. The main 2.2" display is capable of the same 65k colors as the external display, but it is far brighter and colorful. The display really shows off the improved look of the device's user interface. The keypad will be familiar to anybody who has used a RAZR or one of the many RAZR-clones on the market: it consists of a single flat metal panel with slightly raised rubber key separators. It works very well in spite of its ultra-thin design. Located above the alphanumeric keys are the two softkeys, dedicated back and speakerphone buttons, the green and red call controls keys, and a perfectly flat, 5-way d-pad controller. All work very well.

The large metal hinge in the middle of the device is one of the reasons that the RAZR2 design is so tough. I've seen Motorola reps slam them on tables, and had been told that they had even contemplated making a climbing wall out of them to demonstrate their strength. That same hinge, along with the V9's 103mm x 53mm x 12mm (4.1" x 2.1" x .47") dimensions, also make it a bit top heavy when opened up. The fairly strong spring in the hinge seems to slam the phone closed a bit harder than I would normally think prudent. The top of the flip appears to miss the thin rubber bumper that is located below the keypad during closing, which might account for the sense one gets that the phone is slamming shut. In any case, it certainly seems tough enough to take it.The only other complaint I have with the physical design of the RAZR2 V9m is due to the new micro-USB port that the phone uses for both charging and data/headset tasks. The micro-USB connector is a new type of connector designed specifically for mobile devices. It is thinner than the popular mini-USB connector that Motorola and others have been using for years. That part is fine. The cover for the V9m's port, however, is a pain to deal with. It is secured by two strips, which is good, but it is hard to open and darn near impossible to get out of the way far enough to easily insert a charger or cable. Speaking of which, the V9m does not ship with a mini-USB to micro-USB adapter or with a micro-USB cable.

Sony Ericsson Launches MBW-150 Bluetooth Watch Line

Sony Ericsson today added to its Bluetooth watch line that it started first with the interesting yet not widely accepted MBW-100. The new MBW-150 range, developed with Fossil, cuts some of the fat from the older design and comes in three flavors to match your tastes.

The new MBW-150 Bluetooth watch range from Sony Ericsson adds to the already geek-chic design with new digital OLED dials. A vibrating alert will draw your attention to incoming calls or SMS messages on your paired phones, and you can even answer or reject calls right from the watch using simple controls. Music playback from your phone can also be controlled from the device. Up to seven days battery life can be expected for the Bluetooth functionality of the watch, while the device will keep time for an additional seven days after that. All three editions include a scratch-resistant mineral crystal glass face with an anti-glare coating and are water resistant up to 30 meters.

Three versions of the Sony Ericsson MBW-150 will be available: the Classic edition features a black leather band and steel frame, the Music edition keeps similar design elements to the Classic but adds orange and black highlights to match Sony Ericsson's Walkman range, while the Executive edition ups the ante with a stainless steel band to match its face. The Classic edition weighs in at 77g, the Music at 85g, while the steel band of the Executive edition pushes weight up to 182g.

The Sony Ericsson MBW-150 Bluetooth watch will be available during Q4 this year in selected markets.

BlackBerry Curve 8310 - with added GPS

Hot on the heels of the original 8300, the BlackBerry Curve 8310 takes all the features of the 8300 and adds integrated GPS and navigation software.

In the main the 8310's specifications are almost identical to the BlackBerry 8300 - there's a 320x240 pixel display, microSD expandable memory, 2 megapixel camera, multimedia player, mini trackball control and of course it features the usual excellent BlackBerry email client, plus a suite a document viewers and productivity applications.

This particular model is exclusive to Vodafone - at the moment the BlackBerry Curve 8310 isn't available on any other carrier. Indeed, at the moment the only place you can buy the BlackBerry 8310 is from Vodafone Germany.

As we mentioned earlier, the key different between the BlackBerry Curve 8310 and the 8300 is the inclusion of GPS and the Vodafone Navigator package which includes route planning and can also factor in traffic and weather conditions. Maps are downloaded from a central server to keep them up-to-date.

However, our recent experiences with this sort of navigation system indicate that although it's useful to have a SatNav system on you "just in case", the interface on most phones isn't really suitable for use in the car - so you'll need to set the route in advance in most cases rather than "on the go".

The BlackBerry Curve 8310 is available now from Vodafone in Germany at just under €30 on a €45/month contract. Availability in other Vodafone regions is not known at the time of going to press.

Nokia 7900 Prism

Closely related to the Nokia 7500, the Nokia 7900 Prism is a 3G fashion phone with a radical design that some people will love, and others will probably loath. The 7900 uses a lot of metal in its construction, including an aluminium back cover and laser etched detailing.

The Nokia 7900 Prism is a dual-band UMTS/quad-band GSM phone, giving it useful worldwide capabilities when it comes to wireless communications. On the back is a 2 megapixel camera with flash, and inside is an impressive 1GB of memory, although this is not expandable.

The screen on the Nokia 7900 is a little different from most, as it uses an 240x320 pixel OLED display rather than the traditional TFT LCD. OLED gives much lower power consumption (which always useful) but in the past this type of display has been criticised for its short lifespan, particularly with blue colours which typically last for only around 5000 hours (200 days) of continuous use. A fuller explanation of the pros and cons of OLED can be found here.

There are plenty of lighting effects with the Nokia 7900 Prism - the display changes colours according to the time of day, battery life and signal strength. The 7900 also has an illuminated keypad that coordinates with the display. Whether or not people will stare at the phone muttering "it's-so-beautiful" remains to be seen.

The Nokia 7900 Prism is quite a slim 3G phone at 11.3mm thick, it's slightly taller than average at 112 mm too. The 7900 weighs 101 grams and has up to 3 hours talktime with a maximum of 10 days standby time. The Nokia 7900 has Bluetooth, GPRS, EDGE plus of course a multimedia player, web browser and email client.

Nokia say that the 7900 Prism is slated to be available sometime during Q3 2007 at a price of around €400 before tax and subsidy.

Actually, the bluetooth can not be used for stereo headphones (as it also says in the article).

I noticed that a lot of the ones suggested above have still not been added to the adverti.. ahem, I mean "Wikipedia article". If it's because you are having trouble finding a source for it, here's one: http://www.mobile-review.com/articles/2007/iphone-name-en.shtml. That's one of the most respected mobile phone review sites on the web, so it should do.

Here are some of the other ones you can find on that page:

No multitasking (unless for the ability to play music in background mode), no editing of MS Office of Adobe Acrobat documents, and no saving of these, no remote management, no settings on the camera ( ...and yes, no third party applications, not even Java ones).

From where did you got the "No third party apps?" as Jobs clearly mentioned them?! "No 3G" My Gosh, even as fast it is ,3G sucks much of the battery (that's why your batteries are so weak), and Apple wanted a long-use battery (is 24 hours enough to you?).

NO MULTITASKING OTHER THAN PLAYING MUSIC IN BACKGORUND!?!?!? You should really search and read articles before saying stupid things. Go to iPhone's site and stop being ignorant...

First iPhone disassembly

MacNN has obtained disassembly photos of Apple's iPhone in an effort to better learn about the manufacturing process that Apple engineers settled on for the cellular handset. The photos were provided by iFixIt, which sells parts for most Apple products. MacNN obtained an iPhone just after the device launched earlier today, and has posted photos of the device as it was unpacked from the original packaging and turned on to await activation.

Expansion of iPhone related information on Wikipedia?

In my opinion the information about iPhone on Wikipedia should be significantly increased. Meaning several of the sections of this article should be separate articles - e.g. one article dealing with the "history of iPhone" / "development of iPhone", another with "why we should all buy iphone" a third with "Is Steve Jobs messiah and iphone the new bible?" and so forth. The article as it stands is very good, but I miss separate artcles that goes more in detail on the issues, particularly about the history and development of the device.

With an average of 50-100 million hits for the word "iPhone" on Google for the past 5-6 months, such an expansion is certainly justified. Particularly in light of the many much longer articles found on wikipedia dealing with much less known or even partially irrelevant issues.

At news.google.com, "iphone" has currently about 20.000 hits, compared to about 30.000 for "George Bush", 15.000 for "Iraq war" and 14.000 for "Hurricane Katrina", and more than for the 2008 presidential election. - These are just some random examples, but the Wikipedia entries for all the mentioned keywords are certainly much much larger than that of the iPhone, and are divided into many separate articles, so why isn't this the case for the iPhone?

Also, the iPhone's broad coverage on the various news-media suggests that the phenomena is not just associated with the world wide web, but in the society as a whole. (And also on a global scale, e.g. Asia and Europe.)

So based on this, the information about the iPhone on the Wikipedia should, in my opinion, ideally be increased 10-fold...

I strongly disagree, at the moment it's way to much information actually. Time is precious, and a encyklopedia does not need to contain every singel bit of information available about the subject. It's way better if it's only a short description, giving the user a quick overview. What should be included in this article? A short history and a description (size, weight, features etc) of the device, that's all that's really needed. Do we need the date for the FCC approval, pictures of people waiting in line, speculation about future functions etc. 2007-06-30

I think you misunderstand. I agree that the current "iPhone" article has a sufficient lenght, but I propose that other Wikipedia-articles dealing more in depth with various aspects of the iPhone should be included. If you e.g. work for Microsoft and don't want to read more than a brief introduction, then you don't have to, but I don't see a point in resisting the idea. I, for one, wanted to know more about the history of iPhone and therefore conferred the iPhone article. I didn't find the information I was looking for so I had to look elsewhere. In an ideal world I would have found more information on the Wikipedia.

As the English Wikipedia at present has about 1,8 million articles, compared to approximately 120.000 for the Encyclopedia Britannica (the largest in the world after Wikipedia), it is certainly justified to include subarticles to important subjects such as "iPhone". Or is your opinion that Wikipedia should start to shrink instead of being gradually expanded? Is it your opinion that there should be only one Wikipedia article related to e.g. the war in Iraq, instead of the current 20-40?

I disagree with this reasoning for several reasons:

Notability is distinct from "fame", "importance", or "popularity". if we follow your logic in this respect, the Wikipedia would have to be a porn site.
Wikipedia is not where you do original research.. If you find a reliable and verifiable source with a "history of the iPhone", then we kosher. But I think the article as it stands is mostly a good reflection of where reliable and verifiable sources stand on this topic.
The iPhone, ultimately, is of much less encyclopedic value than say, Astrophysics: it is not a revolutionary product in any respect, as it uses technologies pioneered in other devices. Just because Steve Jobs is one of the greatest salesmen to ever exist it doesn't mean iPhone is specially encyclopedic. It is encyclopedic, and we must have a page for it, but a Macintosh 128k it certainly isn't, and this article approaches it in size.

Although I agree with some of this, I think you are exaggerating it way too much. As I mentioned, iPhone currently has about 20.000 hits on news.google.com. - Most of these entries ARE from reliable and independent sources, and points to the "notability" of the "iPhone", particularly as a news event. I also know that the iPhone has been discussed for half an hour even on shows like Charlie Rose that mostly deals with political issues. (In that very show Walter Mossberg from WSJ claims he has never in the past 15 years experienced so much hype about a product). So there should be plenty of information available for new expanded wikipedia entries. I don't follow the "porn"-comparison; there's plenty of articles related to sexual issues on wikipedia... However, the word "porn" only has 100 million hits on Google, which is the same as that of "iPhone". Neither do I accept your suggestion that the only reason for iPhone's success is Steve Jobs' advertising. Even if Steve Jobs' propaganda was the only reason for iPhone's popularity, does it really matter? It isn't up to you or me to decide wether the iPhone is a pioneering device - commentators, experts and analysts should decide that - as well as the opinion of the general population. I do find it sad that there's so little information about the Macintosh 128K on Wikipedia. But we should also accept the fact that newer products and news usually requires a broader coverage than older (in a similar way as the 30-year war from 1618-1648 has much less coverage on wikipedia than the present Iraq war, despite the fact that the former in its time was much more important). Actually most news reports as well as comments by experts and analysts I've seen have in fact said it's way, way overhyped and is nothing special compared to what's out there. In any case, justified or not, hype is a particular poor source for an article. There may be 20k hits on Google news but most of them are likely saying more or less the same thing since there isn't that much to say that isn't already said here. Google is a particular bad way to determined notability in any case for so many reasons which are discussed all over wikipedia. Also you still don't seem to understand the difference between notability and fame. Linda Lovelace the porn star may say be more famous then say Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo the president of the Phillipines, but it doesn't mean she's more noteable. In any case, if you're so convinced that there is a lot of distinct, reliably source information out there, why don't you write the new articles on your talk page and tell us when your done? That "most news reports as well as comments by experts and analysts I've seen have in fact said it's way, way overhyped and is nothing special compared to what's out there" seem like everything from a balanced view on your part. I did go through the major news media's reviews: WSJ, USA Today, TG Daily, SF Chronicle, NYT, Engadget, New York Post, CNET, CBS News, Boston Globe: they don't say what you say. I find it sad that the marked reception/reviews of the iPhone has not been mentioned/discussed in the article, because then someone like you couldn't have made statements like this as easily. Your point about Google being poor for notability I agree, but I am not so sure for Google News. Your examples are not the best ones as "Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo" has 1915 hits on Google News and 2 million hits at Google, compared to 19 hits and 375,000 hits respectively for "Linda Lovelace". Wikipedia says the following about notability: "A topic is presumed to be notable if it has received significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject." Linda Lovelace would certainly not fall into this category, but I cannot understand that iPhone would not. As for your remark about me writing my own articles on my talk page...? Why don't YOU start to write all your articles on your talk page, and tell me when you're done? English is not my native language, I have a limited knowledge of the iPhone, so I am not really up for the job. I came to this article not so much to find the specific information about how the gadget works (this I can find at Apple's websites) as to find out about its history/development, the reason for all the hype, the phenoma, its criticism and so forth. At present very little of this can be found in the article. And I am disappointed about that, that's the reason for my post(s). However, for the past days some 100 edits have been made to the iPhone article daily. Certainly if more iPhone related articles was created, they would be filled up with lots of text in no time. I think the objections by people are coming from sentiment such that spelled out in Wikipedia: The world will not end tomorrow. Sure the iPhone may be the biggest technological development since the original Macintosh (I doubt it is, but let's assume for the purpose of argument). But we should wait until it is clear that it is, not only so we don't jump the gun, but so we will have more reliable sources and publications to use in creating an article. For example, with the Macintosh, it's not at all hard finding info on its revolutionary features and its history.

Certainly the hype is that it is the Next Big Thing, with Jobs apparently considering the phone the greatest thing since the Macintosh. According to a recent New York Times article, Asian cell phone manufacturers, who have been rather blase, after having seen the iPhone, are now rather concerned and moving fast to produce their iPhone clones. They seem to believe the iPhone and Apple's way of doing things will revolutionize the mobile handset industry. At this point, however, a lot of this is just speculation. We certainly don't need to take the extreme step of spinning off several articles. I know there isn't enough material to create high quality articles anyway. Well, I don't think all the "rules" mentioned by you and others should be followed one hundred percent. Even Wikipedia says that the rules (regarding Wikipedia:Notability) "... is not set in stone and should be treated with common sense and the occasional exception."

There's also much confusion about them. There's even a rule that says "If the rules prevent you from improving or maintaining Wikipedia, ignore them." (See Ignore_all_rules). Perhaps this is the case here?

Because if you look at it in a broader perspective, what I see is this: We have an Encyclopedia (English) called wikipedia that has some 15 times more articles/entries than Encyclopedia Britannica. Wikipedia probably contains enough text to fill up a small library if it was written in books. And we have a topic - iPhone - that everyone talks about, that is mentioned in all news media (which qualify as reliable secondary sources), and yet Wikipedia provide only one small article about that topic.

IF more iPhone related article existed, then millions of people would read them. But the case now is that people like me would have to go into the wilderness of a delusional world wide web to find more in-debt information (which I certainy know exist from the random reading of various news articles) about the iPhone instead of on the Wikipedia. Today, for example, a few days after the release of the iPhone, many people are obviously curious about the consensus review on the iPhone and the marked reception. So where should one look to find information about that? Ah! Google, of course! - Certainly not Wikipedia!

One of the strenghts of Wikipedia (compared to e.g. Encyclopedia Britannica), in my and many other's opinion, is actually its broad coverage of recent events (note that there's a difference between the iPhone as a device which may or may not be revolutionary, and the iPhone as a phenomena/event). So when the Virginia Tech Massacre happened, for example, I was pleased to confer Wikipedia to find the relevant information. Where else should I go? CNN? That would not have provided all the information I wanted. Wikinews? No. Of course, if all the editors of wikipedia had to wait for a few months before starting the mentioned article, the very strenght of wikipedia would have weakened. It is certainly true that in time articles will have the potential to get better and better as more reliable and high quality secondary source becomes available. But I don't see that as an argument to wait, because it is really an argument to wait forever.

If all the rules was to be followed 100%, then perhaps 70% of all wikipedias text would have to be erased, maybe some hundred thousand articles should be deleted and so forth. But yet millions of people read those articles and wants them there. And should all be decided by a small elite/community that belive wikipedia should be this or that, rather than letting it in some way evolve into a place where one can find reliable and in depth information about various issues? I guess perhaps yes...! But I don't know if I like it.

The ironical thing is that the iPhone article precisely because of its popularity seems to be more restrained from growing in size (via related articles) than articles for more irrelevant issues, which the Wikipedia is stuffed with. In this way the proportion of the latter relative to the former on Wikipedia would increase.

But I guess this is not the correct place to bring up a discussion about what wikipedia should or should not be. I seem to be unable to get my points through, probably for good reasons. I also suspect the objections to my statements is related to the fear that more text about the iPhone would serve as a marketing for the device and augment its sales (which I don't believe is true; it will only bring out the truth and counterbalance delusional commercials and marketing that people otherwise would get exposed to).

In any case this will be my last word in this discussion.

I think there's a case for having a separate technical article on the exact specs, capabilities and compatabilities of the iPhone. Apple's own information is far too skimpy (their page doesn't even mention that the phone has a speaker for hands-free use), and given the interest in this unit, many potential buyers will want to know exactly what it does and doesn't do ... whereas casual browsers of the iPhone main page might not care. For instance, can you load miscellaneous computer files onto it, like a memory stick? These things are difficult to find out. ErkDemon 12:26, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Sony Ericsson's W800i, the first of the big three music phones (Motorola/Apple and Nokia are set to deliver the others), arrives in the stores tomorrow via Orange, though other networks will offer it soon.

The phone, a revamp of the K750i with more prominent music-playing facilities, scores highly for its superb battery life (Sony Ericsson claims 30 hours if you only listen to music, but we made it more like 20 while playing MP3s) and a reasonably generous 512MB of storage. The interface is simple to use and the phone includes a radio, access to tracks downloaded via Orange's Music World service and a two megapixel camera.

Sound quality via the on-board speakers lacks presence and serious music fans will want to replace the set's accompanying earphones. Annoyingly, users have to load the clunky Disc2Phone software on to their PC before they can transfer tracks to the handset's Memory Stick. There's no disputing this is a great all-round handset and the best music phone so far, but it still leaves rivals plenty to shoot at. It is available from free depending on your contract.

iPhone & LG Prada Phone controversy

According to reports, LG Electronics is accusing Apple of stealing the concept of its much-hyped iPhone from LG’s own Prada model.

As per a Korean website, Woo-Young Kwak, head of LG Mobile Handset R&D Center, said at a press conference, “We consider that Apple copied Prada phone after the design was unveiled when it was presented in the iF Design Award and won the prize in September 2006. We take that to mean 'Apple stole our idea'.” Even though Apple's technology is more than years more advance.

Nokia, the world's largest cell-phone maker, has a new wireless device. It isn't a mobile phone. And it doesn't use a cellular network. It's a gadget for the home that takes the Finnish company into a new -- and risky -- area of the consumer-electronics business.

Called the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet, it's about the size of a paperback book and designed specifically for browsing the Web and checking e-mail via a home or hot-spot Wi-Fi network. And where Wi-Fi isn't available, it can still access the Web by using a cell phone equipped with Bluetooth wireless technology.

NEW TERRITORY. The new product is the first Nokia (NOK ) personal communications device that doesn't contain a cellular radio. It's part of a major strategy shift that began in 2004 when Nokia rejiggered its product organizations into four groups to attack new markets —- an effort that's just starting to bear fruit.

The Internet Tablet, which weighs about 8 ounces, includes a 4.13-inch-wide touch screen and can recognize handwriting. A virtual keyboard appears on the screen, and users navigate with a stylus. Nokia says it will be available during the third quarter.

With revenue growth from its bread-and-butter cell phones slowing down, the $40 billion company is eager to find new areas to exploit. So it's zeroing in on Wi-Fi, whose users are expected to jump from 20 million last year to 75 million users in 2009, according to consultancy Pyramid Research. Nokia is banking on the use of Wi-Fi-enabled portable devices -— mainly limited so far to laptops and some personal digital assistants (PDAs) -- rising along the same growth curve.

MORE PORTABLE ALTERNATIVE. That's a market opportunity many companies are eyeing also. As Nokia ventures outside of its cell-phone realm, it'll be pitched against consumer-electronics manufacturers like Samsung and LG, which have introduced Internet-enabled kitchen appliances in the past year. Other rivals include PC manufacturers like Dell (DELL ) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ ), which offer Windows PocketPC handheld devices that use Wi-Fi.

Nokia hopes the device will emerge as an alternative to a second or third PC for the home, says Ari Jaaksi, a director in Nokia's Convergence Products group. The idea is that consumers will use the Internet Tablet to surf the Web or check e-mail while sunning on the deck -- without having to fire up a bulky laptop or squint at a tiny PDA screen.

At first glance, the device appears to be a cross between an Internet appliance (a Web-access-only gadget) and a Tablet PC -- two products that are notorious for having bombed. But the main difference between the Internet Tablet and predecessors is higher-speed communications and its price: $350.

BREAK FROM SYMBIAN. Nokia will sell the device online, through consumer-electronics retailers, and broadband service providers, such as Wi-Fi hot-spot operators and cable companies. Those companies will likely subsidize its $350 retail price, says Boyd Peterson, an analyst with research consultancy Yankee Group. He predicts consumers will pay below $100 or even get the device for free from some providers. Nokia's Jaaksi won't identify service providers supporting the Internet Tablet but says they're lining up to offer it to their customers.

Unlike Tablet PCs based on an operating system from Microsoft (MSFT ), the Internet Tablet runs on Linux. The open-source operating system is familiar to a huge community of developers. Nokia hopes these programmers will help develop nifty applications for the device such as phone calling over Wi-Fi.

Adopting Linux is a break from the software Nokia has used in its cell phones. For several years, it has been the driving force behind the Symbian operating system for handsets with lots of computing power. However, Symbian is optimized for mobile phones. Linux also allows Nokia to offer its device at a much lower price -- an advantage it'll need as more competitors jump into this market.

SEEDING THE MARKET? Nokia says that compared to existing mobile devices, such as cell phones and PDAs that can browse the Web, the Internet Tablet will offer a superior experience because it's designed specifically for broadband networks.

The main reason why wireless Web usage hasn't taken off on cell phones (only 3% of U.S. wireless users browse the Net on a daily basis, according to consultancy Parks Associates) is that the cellular connections have been too slow, and their devices' screens are too small for comfort, says Neil Strother, an analyst with tech consultancy In-Stat. Nokia says the Internet Tablet addresses both failings.

Will it succeed? Long-time Nokia customers, mobile operators, could grumble about the vendor trying to serve rivals offering competing technologies. But so far, the cellular service companies have had only minimal success in getting users to browse the Web. If the Internet Tablet is a success, it might help seed the market for wireless data, helping all players.

The success of Kyocera's new combination mobile phone and personal digital assistant rests on the shoulders of consumers who prefer cell phones to PDAs.

Kyocera's competition, Handspring and Nokia, which offer combination "smartphones" with integrated computer keyboards, render voice communications a side note.

Kyocera's (KYO) new 7135 smartphone, however, emphasizes voice communications first, with the PDA functions an added bonus.

"Despite the data capabilities of the device, voice remains the killer application," said Rick Goetter, senior product marketing manager for Kyocera.

The 7135, which will hit the market by the end of this year, will sell for $500 to $600 depending on the subsidy that comes with the service plan.

Like its predecessor, the QCP 6035, that in March 2000 was the first-ever Palm-powered smartphone on the market, the phone still has a bulky, gray, plastic cover design. While it is smaller than the previous smartphone, the phone weighs 6.6 ounces.

"They kind of adopted that whole industrial design look for the phone," said IDC analyst Kevin Burden.

Still, Burden considers the phone "a decent update from the old one."

The smartphone, which has a clamshell design, opens up to a high-resolution 65,000-color screen and numbers keypad. While Goetter insists that Kyocera customers don't mind writing messages with the numbers keypad and/or Graffiti, analysts prefer the integrated keyboard of the Handspring Treo communicator.

"You can scratch out an e-mail message through Graffiti, but there are better options out there," Burden said.

But for on-the-go professionals who despise carrying multiple devices, the 7135 is worth a look, Burden said.

The smartphone runs on the Palm operating system and is compatible with the high-speed CDMA networks being built by Verizon Wireless and Sprint PCS. While not all potential customers may live in an area with that coverage, those who do will get Web content and e-mail on the phone at up to 153 kilobits per second.

The phone, which carries 16 MB of memory, runs on Palm OS version 4.1. The latest version of the operating system, Palm OS 5.0, which has a faster processor, began shipping only two weeks ago.

"It is time" for a new phone, Burden said. "It was probably a little bit longer than a year since we've been waiting for an update."

The phone contains a secure digital expansion slot so that users can obtain more memory and Web clippings on the devices. There's also an MMC card slot for MP3 tunes.

Isaac Ro, an analyst with market research and consulting firm Aberdeen, said the Handspring Treo communicator, probably the closest device competing with the Kyocera 7135 smartphone, doesn't have an MP3 player.

"It's something slightly different," Ro said.

The smartphone also features a GPS chip enabling emergency dispatchers to pinpoint the location of callers who dial 911. This feature opens the door to other location-based services like on-the-spot maps, but Ro doesn't expect to see these services for another two years.

The smartphone, which has up to 3.2 hours of talk time and up to 120 hours of standby time, has voice-activated dialing and a voice memo recorder.

Besides the basic PDA features -- calendar, address book and to-do-list -- the smartphone includes an HTML and WAP browser for Web surfing. It has two-way short messaging (SMS) and supports Microsoft Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets. The phone can additionally be used as a wireless fax and modem.

Verizon Wireless sells the Audiovox Thera, powered by Microsoft's Windows software. Several mobile-phone service providers carry the Handspring Treo communicator.

The Samsung I300 and Nokia communicator are available online.

"There is less of a geek factor of these devices now than it was a year ago," Burden said.

Cell Phone Tracking is a technology used to track the current position of a cell phone. To locate the phone, it must be turned on but does not require an active call.

In order to route calls to your phone the cell towers listen for a signal sent from the phone and negotiate which tower is best able to communicate with the phone. As the phone changes location, the towers monitor the signal and the phone is switched to a different tower as appropriate. By comparing the relative signal strength from multiple towers a general location of a phone can be determined.

Tracking by is available for uploading this information to a common web site where your "friends and family" can view your last reported position.

Newer phones may have built-in GPS receivers which could be used in a similar fashion, but with much higher accuracy.

Some newer phones and technology may also allow the tracking of the phone even when turned off. Also, phones can have secondary batteries installed to allow tracking even if the battery is removed.

A few years ago, the FCC mandated that cell phones have GPS capacity or some form of location mechanism so that the phone and its operator could be located in the case of a 911 call. The law took effect at the beginning of 2005. Today, over one hundred million cell phones in this country have a chip that provides GPS capacity and increasingly, software services are emerging that put them to use.

GPS stands for Global Positioning Software and it simply means that an equipped device can be located by the satellites overhead in geosynchronous orbit that are built to pick up GPS signals. While the cell phone companies initially were reluctant to participate, they have begun to develop subscription services that provide software to help you use the tracking system.

The GPS technology without bells and whistles simply pinpoints the location of your cell phone. A techie named Chuck Fletcher developed a freeware program called Mologogo that allows one Mologogo equipped phone to locate other, similarly equipped phones. It's become a method for a few thousand cell owners to keep track of each other, but hasn't moved much beyond that.

Verizon and Sprint have developed subscription services that will allow your phone to pinpoint your location, complete with overhead map. It's a mobile driving assistance tool that should enjoy some degree of popularity. The cell phone companies have been reticent to provide general access to the GPS feature in their phones, because it can be a sensitive privacy issue - especially if you're somewhere you're not supposed to be.

More to the point, however, is the fact that the cell operators see the GPS technology as a potential profit center. One way to get driving directions with a GPS cell phone is to subscribe to a GPS navigation service. Nextel offers two: Televigation's TeleNav and Motorola's ViaMoto. Using the GPS and Nextel's network, TeleNav and ViaMoto can send driving directions to a Nextel phone. If you make a wrong turn or miss a street, the service detects that you're off the route and new route is calculated to put you back on track.

Aside from the basic mapping and location support, if you're a Sprint-Nextel customer you can subscribe to a service called Smarter Agent. This GPS supported technology is tied to a real estate database and can provide you with information on home sales in the neighborhood where you and your cell phone happen to be located. It will identify which homes have sold in the neighborhood in the last few years, and for what price.

Verizon has a service called getGOING. You can download applications such as AtlasBook Places. With AtlasBook Places you can get maps and directions and navigate to nearby places. An option is a web-based planning tool. These functions are available on selected Verizon phones.

There's an inherent privacy issue here that is a challenge for the major cell providers. Sprint-Nextel is the only company that has always allowed access to the GPS chips in its handsets. They have a strict privacy agreement with any third party service providers such as Smart Agent. If you download software that is not provided through Nextel, however, you have no such guarantee of privacy. This issue, aside from dollar signs, is what has kept GPS functionality largely an in-house development of the cell phone companies.

The cost to buy your own second cell phone, just for international travel, has now come within the reach of all travelers. As with renting an international cell phone, the cost of your calls will depend on what type of SIM card your phone uses. If you use a global SIM card, you will keep the same number in every country but your call charges will be a little higher. If you use local SIM cards you will get cheaper calls but have to buy a different one for each country you visit in the future — this can start to get expensive if you are a frequent traveler.

Conclusion — If you cannot use your own cell phone, buying a second one is generally more cost effective than renting every time. If you want a system that is easy to use then a global SIM card will be the best for you. OggPlay is an audio player for smartphones. OggPlay was initially written for SonyEriccson P800 and then released under the GPL by Leif H. Wilden. In a true open source project, OggPlay has been since ported to several Symbian phones. OggPlay project is hosted in Sourceforge.

File Format Supported:

Snapshot: Nokia Launches 6110 GPS Navigator

Today here in Barcelona at the 3GSM trade show, Nokia launched the new 6110 Navigator. The 6110 comes with built-in GPS and A-GPS (assisted GPS) modules and the mapping software needed to make it all work. The device will be able to tell you where you are, where the nearest points of interest are, and how to get to the destination of your choice. It can provide turn by turn voice instructions and on-screen turn indicators to aid in use while driving. Another hat-tip to drivers is the new mail application that can actually read your mail to you so that you don't have to take your eyes off of the road.

Other things of interest in the S60 based smartphone include a 2 megapixel camera, high-speed HSDPA 3G data, and a microSD memory card that can add up to 2GB of additional storage to the slider handset.

The 6110 will ship with local maps pre-loaded on a memory card when it becomes available in Q2 of this year.

Hands-On: HTC Athena / Dopod U1000

Earlier this week Dopod Hong Kong announced the U1000. Based on the HTC Athena reference design, the U1000 is basically a Hong Kong version of T-Mobile's Ameo. Dopod warned that not all features (especially GPS) can be used in all markets, even with manual setup. They claimed that regional versions differ not only in language packs and themes but other subtle system registry differences that users have no access to.

The 624Mhz Intel Bulverde CPU worked well, but actual performance appeared to be more limited by the 128MB RAM. This is especially apparent when loading up the camera. Loading files from the 256MB ROM and the 4GB miniSDHC are noticeably faster than from the 8GB MicroDrive hard disk. When you save a file, the device will prompt you to choose between the ROM or the MicroDrive.

It might not be truly fair to comment on the streaming video quality, as that depends heavily on individual network coverage, but with that said, everything seemed to work just as it should. Don't expect too much from the ATI W2284 graphics chip, however, as it didn't really seem to make much of a difference in video quality. Since we didn't get to test the U1000's gaming abilities, we'll give the W2284 the benefit of the doubt for now. Also, the native VGA TV-out worked flawlessly, and the system does not slow down at all when TV-out is on.

The keypad was far from great, much to our disappointment. Tactile feedback was inadequate and the connection with the device was not always reliable. The magnet mechanism that holds the keyboard over the screen as a cover worked well, though.

One interesting feature on the Dopod U1000 is the VueFLO motion sensor, which can respond to the slanting of the device. As such, you can tilt the screen to scroll up or down. This worked pretty well during our quick test. Take note that only the Opera Browser and Internet Explorer can make use of the VueFLO motion sensor, neither the main menu nor other programs currently support the system.

The battery bundled with the device has a huge 2200mAh capacity. Dopod claims the device is capable of up to 300 hours of standby time. Talk times of up to 5.5 hours on GSM networks should also be within reach. Charging can be done via USB.

The Dopod U1000 will start selling in Hong Kong in late February, suggested retail price is a whopping US$1280, which is comparable to a full blown UMPC.

Nokia's communicator is back

The Communicator legacy lives on today with the release of Nokia's new E90, complete with the side-folding design and QWERTY keyboard that fans of the series have come to love. With an interesting dual-hinge design, the Nokia E90 can be folded open 180 degrees like the 9300, but without the unsightly hinge.

Dropping the Series 80 operating system, the Nokia E90 Communicator now sports S60, bringing with it compatibility with a vast range of software titles. The advent of S60 on a Communicator also means that the external screen and keypad of the E90 can be used to access any feature of the phone, where in previous generations the external controls could only access the 'dumb' features of the device. The external screen is a decent QVGA resolution unit, with the internal display sporting a fantastic 800x352 pixel resolution.

The Nokia E90 has a lot to boast about when it comes to the feature list. High-speed data is taken care of with HSDPA/UMTS and WiFi 802.11b/g WLAN, with a GPS module compatible with Nokia Maps also on board. Media fans are not left in the lurch despite the Nokia E90 Communicator's roots in the enterprise, with a 3.2 megapixel camera plus a second camera for video calling, full media playback capabilities, and FM radio all available. Up to 128MB of internal memory is available, with microSD memory expansion for storing all your media.

Nokia state that the E90 Communicator will begin to appear in stores during the second quarter of 2007, with general availability scheduled for Q3. The Nokia E90 will be priced at between 750 and 800 Euros (approximately US$975-US$1040).
